Dark Red Golden Retriever Puppies
AKC registered, health tested, and raised here with our family. Our Goldens run from medium golden to the darkest red.
Why dark red?
A dark red Golden stops people on the street. The coat runs from a deep copper to the darkest red the breed carries, with the same soft ears, the same kind eyes, and the same shoe carrying Golden underneath.
My family's very first Golden, when I was young, was a dark red named Abby. I fell in love with her personality and the comfort of sitting next to the couch with her, watching TV.
Dark red Goldens tend to have a shorter coat and don't shed as much, and I love their wispy ears. I've also found they tend to be on the smaller side, which I feel keeps their joints healthier and gives them more longevity.
Matt Elsmore, Rosewood Goldens
Our Goldens run from medium golden to the darkest red, and around here color is where the conversation starts, not where it ends. Every puppy is still a Golden first: health tested parents, a family temperament, and a breeder who picks up the phone.
Color is the start. Health comes first.
Every Rosewood Golden Retriever is tested through Embark for the roughly 300 known genetic anomalies specific to this breed, and every one of our dogs is anomaly free. Our adults carry OFA clearances for hips and elbows, and we keep a low COI in every pairing.
We breed on the trimmer side of the AKC standard on purpose, for the joints and the long life. All of our dogs live here with us, in packs, so you meet both parents in the same place. Licensed and inspected by the State of Wisconsin.
The temperament we breed for
Playful with an off switch. Smart without being trouble. A cuddle monster with an empathetic streak, the kind of dog that ends up in a therapy vest or on the couch with the kid who had a hard day.

How it works with us
- Join the free waiting list, then call or text us. We'd rather talk it through with you than have you guess from a web page.
- No deposit until the puppies are born, and you know your place in line the same day.
- Visits are always welcome, by appointment. You meet both parents in the same place.
- You choose your puppy on pick-up day, once their personalities show. We never choose for you. If the right puppy isn't there that day, your deposit moves to the next litter.
- The balance is due on pick-up day. We don't hide behind a contract like most breeders. We stand by Luke 6:31, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” That's how we've treated every family for twenty years, and it's a big part of why we've done so well.
Hoping for a certain shade? Call or text 715-607-1837 and we'll tell you which upcoming litters are expected to carry red and dark red puppies, or book a call.
Questions families ask us
Are dark red Golden Retrievers purebred?
Yes. Our dark red Goldens are AKC registered, purebred Golden Retrievers from two AKC registered Golden Retriever parents. Red is one of the natural shades of gold in the breed, and nothing is mixed in to get it.
Is a dark red Golden the same as a red Golden mix or a red doodle?
No. A red mixed breed can look similar in photos, but it is a different dog, with a different coat, size and temperament. Both parents of every Rosewood puppy are AKC registered Golden Retrievers, and you meet them here.
Does color change a Golden's temperament or health?
No. Color is a coat shade, not a personality. Temperament comes from the parents and from how the puppies are raised, which is why we let you meet both parents and why every one of our dogs is health tested, whatever their shade.
Will my puppy's color change as they grow?
Most Golden puppies change shade as the adult coat comes in over the first year or two. A common hint is the color of the ears, which is often close to the adult color. We'll tell you what we expect for each puppy based on the parents and the litters before.
Do you have dark red puppies available now?
Our litters fill from our waiting list. Call or text 715-607-1837 and we'll tell you which upcoming litters are expected to carry red and dark red puppies, then join the free waiting list and tell us dark red is your preference.
What is a fair price for a Golden Retriever puppy?
A fair price is one that pays for what a good start actually costs. Before a litter is planned, both parents are health tested, with Embark DNA testing for the known genetic anomalies in the breed and OFA clearances for hips and elbows. Then come weeks of daily care and socialization, vet visits, a first vaccine, a microchip, AKC registration, and support for the life of the dog. When you compare breeders, compare what each price includes, not just the number. Call or text us and we'll walk you through our pricing and everything that comes home with your puppy.
Why do well bred Golden Retriever puppies cost more?
Health testing, time, and care. Every parent is tested before a litter is planned, the puppies are raised by hand until go-home day, they see a vet before they leave, and the breeder answers the phone years later. Cheaper puppies usually skip one or more of those steps, and the cost tends to show up later. Reach out to a few of their past families and ask them about their experience.
Is a very cheap Golden Retriever puppy a red flag?
Usually, yes. Very low prices, pressure to pay a deposit right away, no phone call, and payment by gift card or a payment app to a stranger are the most common pattern in puppy scams. Scammers have even copied breeder names, ours included. Rosewood deposits are arranged directly with us, through RosewoodGoldens.com, and you can always call 715-607-1837 to check.
When do I pay a deposit, and do you use a contract?
We don't take a deposit until the puppies are born, and you know your place in line the same day. The balance is due on pick-up day. We don't hide behind a contract like most breeders. We stand by Luke 6:31, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” That's how we've treated every family for twenty years, and it's a big part of why we've done so well.
